Western voters size up GOP field on three big issues

By DAVID LIGHTMAN
Republican voters across the West have three big issues on their minds: Washington is maddeningly intrusive and distant. Illegal immigration remains an emotional, intractable issue. And the sputtering economy seems more dismal than ever.
Western Republicans are frustrated, but they also know that solutions will not come quickly, and there's no obvious favorite in the Republican nomination derby to challenge President Barack Obama.
"We're having a healthy debate," said Carol del Carlo of Lake Tahoe, Nev., the state Republican Party secretary.
The Rocky Mountain and Southwestern states are being watched closely because they're crucial to winning the GOP nomination, and they're volatile. Nevada is the region's bellwether, since it's scheduled to hold the West's first presidential caucus, now set for Jan. 14, but that date could shift.
Western states are hard to handicap, partly because their populations have exploded in recent years with people moving in from all over the country. They also lack the political organizations and ingrained partisan voting habits often prevalent in East Coast and Midwestern states.
Western Republicans this year are sizing up presidential candidates based on three key issues - immigration, economics and big government.
Businessman Herman Cain won a straw poll of GOP activists meeting in Las Vegas last week. Of the 552 people who
participated, 30.8 percent preferred Cain. Next was former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, who
won the 2008 Nevada caucus easily, at 29 percent, followed by former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, with 20.3 percent. Fourth was Texas Rep. Ron Paul at 9.8 percent. Texas Gov. Rick Perry was a distant fifth at 3.62 percent. All but Romney addressed the crowd; Cain got the biggest ovation.
Perry, whose state shares a 1,254-mile border with Mexico, has tried to inject a dose of realism into the immigration debate. He's talked tough about border security while trying to show compassion via his support for in-state college tuition for children of illegal immigrants.
He's drawn political fire for that view, but veteran Western analysts argue that there is no politically convenient way to discuss immigration.

"The solution lies somewhere in the middle. We need to have conversations, but they're drowned out by both sides of the spectrum," said Alex Garza, vice chairman of the Las Vegas Latin Chamber of Commerce.
When Garza urged comity at a conservative voters' meeting in Las Vegas last week, he got little sympathy.
"They've come to take our jobs. They're invaders; they're not immigrants," said Dan Hickey, a Las Vegas physician's assistant.
"If they love our country so much ... let them come here the right way," added Jeri Taylor-Swade, editor of a conservative Las Vegas newspaper.

"The response to this initiative was swift as local activists chimed in on the plan:

“The issue came to a head over the weekend. Jeri Taylor-Swade and Laurel Fee, the leaders of TRUNC — Tea Party & Republicans Uniting Nevada Conservatives — blasted Tarkanian and the party.”

‘This is a wide open door to massive voting fraud and disruption of the Republican process by Democrat-controlled Acorn type organizations and elitist, calculating Republicans wishing to control the election outcome in our important swing state,’ TRUNC said in a news release.

After the press release from the leader of TRUNC appeared, the Nevada GOP went into full damage control mode and even released the following statement on their website:"

“The perception is that the current party leadership has been operating behind closed doors and not keeping the central committee informed, and there is some angst over this,” echoed a member of the leadership of the Clark County Republican Party. (RELATED: NH Republicans want Romney to join Nevada boycott)

Jeri Taylor-Swade, another central committee member, said that all the jostling “just causes a lot of confusion and questioning — why are they doing this?”
Much of the anger comes from the sense that this is an attempt to hand the caucuses to Romney.
One source familiar with the proceedings said that members see the move as “a sell out to Romney and RNC,” and believe that the decision amounts to the leadership “shoving a candidate down the throats of the voters.”

Nevada GOP faces internal party discontent over moving caucus date 11:47 PM 10/19/2011

“The anger is palpable,” said one central committee member.
A big problem, said the committee member, is the “lack of transparency” in the decision making process. Many see it as the product of a “smoke-filled, back-room deal.”

TRUNC hosts CD2 Congressional Special Election 3 city, 3 day Candidate Debate

By TRUNC
    http://www.prlog.org/11498893-trunc-hosts-cd2-congressional-special-election-3-city-3-day-candidate-debate.html

TRUNC is hosting a 3 city Candidate Debate. Top candidates will debate issues live based on questions

submitted by CD2 residents. Special election is to fill CD2 Congressional seat vacated by Dean Heller.

Pahrump, Elko, Sparks KPVM TV will air live

TRUNC (Tea Party & Republicans Uniting Nevada Conservatives) is hosting a 3 day, 3 city debate of the

top candidates as they pursue a seat in the Special Election set for Sept. 13, 2011. Mandated by law, no

primary will be held. Presently the State of NV is in turmoil awaiting the Supreme Court decision. A

decision that will ultimately decide which candidates will be on the ballot. TRUNC will go forward with

the debate of the candidates no matter who ends up on the ballot. It is TRUNC's position that the voters of

Congressional District 2 have a right to hear from the candidates who are seeking their vote. TRUNC's goal

is to educate voters so that they can make an informed decision on who best represents them and Nevada in

these critical times.

With such a short time frame between the courts' pending decision and election day, and with NO primary,

TRUNC feels that this is the best opportunity for constituents to hear from the candidates.

The debate will be live in three cities all within Congressional District 2. Pahrump June 23, Elko June 24,

and Sparks June 25th. The events are FREE, but require registration for tickets. Visit

www.TRUNConline.com and click on the Candidate Debate Ticket link.

Tea Partiers to host GOP debates for House special electionBy Karoun Demirjian (contact
Las Vegas Sun
Wednesday, May 18, 2011 | 9:26 p.m
The election to fill the vacant House seat in Nevada’s 2nd Congressional District is set to be a free-for-all, and two Tea Party activists are trying to bring a little clarity to the Republican side.Jeri Taylor-Swade and Laurel Fee, the force behind Nevada’s forthcoming conservative news publication T.R.U.N.C., will announce this week that they will host debates in three locations around CD2 for “serious Republican candidates” in late June, at least one of which will be televised live. The first, to be held in Pahrump on June 23, will be televised live on Pahrump’s KPVM television station. The second will be in Elko on June 24, the third in Sparks on June 25; broadcast details have yet to be finalized about the latter two.“The whole reason why we’re doing this is because T.R.U.N.C. believes we need to give people a chance to make an educated decision on their vote,” Taylor-Swade said. “And the only way to make an educated decision on their vote is to hear from the candidates. We want to give the people a chance to know who they’re voting for.”T.R.U.N.C. stands for Tea Partiers & Republicans Uniting Nevada Conservatives; and in a way, that’s just what Taylor-Swade and Fee are trying to do through these debates: help the party define a candidate, without the aid of a party process.“There’s going to be no primary in the special election,” Fee said, “so we move from area to area in CD2 where the residents will be voting.”“We just want to host a debate for serious candidates that have a chance at actually making a difference, and getting votes,” Taylor-Swade added. The special election is a general election only; there are no preliminary rounds in which to select a candidate. That format was initially expected to favor Democrats, as there are several strong Republican candidates in the field, including: state Sen. Greg Brower, R-Reno; Kirk Lippold, former commander of the USS Cole; Lt. Gov. Brian Krolicki; Nevada GOP Chairman Mark Amodei; and of course, the Tea Party’s local favorite, Sharron Angle — who showed she’s got quite a knack for winning Republican primaries last cycle. But then Democrats started fielding a few extra candidates. Now it’s not clear who has the advantage, and the key challenge for both sides appears the same: to unofficially corral party voters around the candidate with the most promise, and hope the other side’s votes get split across too many candidates to make a difference.Although general elections usually inspire general debates, Taylor-Swade and Fee don’t have to bother with such formalities: They are self-declared Tea Party conservatives, and though they’re taking care not to pick and choose among Republican candidates, their intention is to promote Nevada conservatives. If they can buy the TV time, they can put on the show. They’ll get help from Western PAC, whose chairman is the Tea Party’s other lost best hope from 2010, Joe Miller. He beat incumbent Alaska Sen. Lisa Murkowski in the Republican primary, but then lost to her running as an Independent in the general election. Taylor-Swade and Fee said they didn’t yet have cost estimates for staging and broadcasting three debates, nor have they finalized a guest list; they’re waiting first to see what the field fully yields.Candidates have to declare their intentions and file paperwork to participate in the special general election

T.R.U.N.C. weighs in on Senator Ensigns' Resignation

Heller appointment bad for Nevada, Bad for Heller
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASEPRLog (Press Release)Apr 25, 2011
While the word in the news by political pundits is that Dean Heller will be Governor Sandoval’s pick to fill Senator Ensigns vacated seat…the word on the street is that may not be in Nevada’s best interest. The state is already facing a budget crisis that would be further exasperated by the need to fund a special election to fill the empty congressional seat Heller would have to abandon.
Nevada’s special election law has not been tested and the controversy already looming on the laws interpretation of how candidates will be chosen and put on the ballot will insure the whole mess ends up in the courts and cause further party divide. With no primary to be held, the lawyers and pundits will decide how to pick the candidates for a special election diminishing the people’s ability to choose who will represent them. The financial burden of a special election and the inevitable court costs will be put on the backs of Nevada tax payers. Nevadans will not have the representation they deserve in Washington (for up to six months) as the chaos is sorted out back home. This scenario should be unacceptable to Nevadan’s especially since the wounds to Nevada would be self-inflicted by appointing Dean Heller.
While the word in the news by political pundits is that appointing Dean Heller will give him a leg up in 2012…The word on the street is that the theory that an appointed official gains the same advantage as an incumbent candidate is statistically speaking, not true. The United States Senate captures by far more media then the House and if Heller is now playing in Harry Reid’s sand box, every move, every statement and every vote by the “appointed” Senator Heller would be under a high powered microscope by the Democratic Party that hopes to win the seat with Shelley Berkley in 2012.
T.R.U.N.C. (Tea Party & Republicans Uniting Nevada Conservatives) believes that the Democrats will use the “appointed Senators” status to derail a 2012 campaign. A Heller appointment could spell DEFEAT in 2012 guaranteeing Shelley Berkley and the Democrats a victory in gaining another Senate
at in the Silver State. Let us not forget the Reid machine and the Democrats marketing methods of un-truths, partial quotes, the use of the words “bizarre and “extreme” and the money pouring in to defame the name of a conservative candidate. If Heller sits in the appointed seat from now ‘till 2012 the Democrats will have an advantage in that time period to create doubt in the eyes of the voters as to Heller’s validity as the “people’s choice”, not to mention the money Heller would need to defend the attacks leaving his war chest for 2012 severely handicapped.
Many believe that a trusted conservative “place holder” that has no interest in seeking re-election in 2012 should be appointed to serve Nevada for the remainder of Ensigns term.
A “place holder” would not be intimidated, could not be induced, and would not be consumed with re-election and best of all the Democrats would consider it pointless to attack or diminish the “place holder”, as there would be no advantage. Further this allows the appointed “place holder” to cast conservative votes in the U.S. Senate with no apology or backlash.
It is in our opinion that if Heller is offered the appointment by Governor Sandoval he should respectively decline with a gracious and sincere “thanks but no thanks”.

T.R.U.N.C. believes that Dean Heller would be esteemed in the voters eyes as one that does not play “good Ole’ boy politics” for personal gain but actually cares about the constituents who sent him to Congress. What better representation could Heller provide to the voters of Nevada then to fulfill his congressional duties and in the process save our state tremendous amounts of money? By declining the expected appointment, Heller will maintain crucial and continuous representation in the House. If Dean Heller will follow this path, it is our opinion that he will gain respect and further support as he endears voter’s state wide to send him to the Senate legitimately in 2012.

Tax Day Tea Party Rally
We're NOT going away...
Tell elected officials what you want to say...
and if they don't listen, we'll send them on their way!
Pay attention, The Tea Party is here and we're here to stay...
Calling all Patriots to come out for the big day...
'cause we're the Tea Party and we're not going away!
You make the sign, say what YOU want to say...

They will hear us on this tax day!
